What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic massage technique that uses slow, firm, sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Where Swedish massage works primarily on the superficial muscles for relaxation, deep tissue targets the underlying muscle fibres, fascia, and tendons where chronic tension, adhesions, and trigger points accumulate over time.

The technique involves working across the grain of the muscle (cross-fibre friction), sustained direct pressure on trigger points, and slow stripping strokes along the length of the muscle. This breaks down adhesions — bands of rigid tissue that cause pain, restrict range of motion, and limit blood flow.

Deep tissue massage is not about applying maximum force. Ricky Arora RMT works slowly and methodically, checking in throughout the session to ensure pressure is productive and within your tolerance. Effective deep tissue work is controlled, not aggressive.

Conditions It Addresses

  • Chronic neck and shoulder tension
  • Upper and lower back pain
  • Postural imbalances from desk work
  • Muscle knots and trigger points
  • Tension headaches originating in the neck
  • Repetitive strain and overuse injuries
  • Hip tightness and sciatica-related tension
  • Recovery from soft-tissue injuries

What to Expect — Pressure and Communication

Deep tissue massage is collaborative. Before your session, Ricky will ask about your specific areas of tension, the history of any recurring pain, and your pressure preferences. This shapes the entire treatment.

During the session, you'll experience sustained pressure on tight areas. Some discomfort is normal and expected — often described as a "productive pain" that releases as the tissue responds. If pressure becomes sharp or uncomfortable, communicate immediately. Ricky adjusts in real time.

After a deep tissue session, mild soreness in the treated areas for 24–48 hours is normal and a sign that the tissue is responding. Drinking water and light movement aid recovery.

Deep Tissue Massage FAQ

Deep tissue massage involves firm pressure and can produce some discomfort in tense areas — often described as a "good pain" or intense pressure that releases. Ricky works slowly and checks in throughout. You control the pressure at all times. Sharp or acute pain is a signal to adjust, and Ricky responds immediately.
Deep tissue massage is particularly effective for chronic neck and shoulder tension, upper and lower back pain, postural issues from extended desk work, muscle knots and trigger points, tension headaches, repetitive strain injuries (RSI), and general recovery from soft-tissue overuse.
Yes, when performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). Most employer extended health plans (Green Shield, Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, Desjardins) cover RMT massage therapy regardless of the specific technique used. Check your policy for your annual limit.
For chronic tension or recurring pain, an initial course of sessions every 1–2 weeks for 4–6 weeks is common to break the cycle. After that, monthly maintenance sessions are typically recommended. Your RMT will suggest a frequency based on how your body responds.
Mild soreness in the treated areas for 24–48 hours is normal after a deep tissue session — similar to how muscles feel after a good workout. It indicates the tissue is responding and reorganizing. Drinking plenty of water and light movement the next day aid recovery. Significant soreness beyond 48 hours is unusual and worth mentioning at your next session.
